Maucale School, Baucau District

2011 – $35,000 3 Classroom and Teachers’ Room Semi-Permanent Building and Toilets

Maucale is a small village 3 1/2 hours from Dili.  The school’s 258 students were crammed into two buildings: a 3 classroom building that couldn’t be used in the wet season and was near to collapse and another building with 3 tiny classrooms.  Many children couldn’t be taught at all in the wet season.

Spend it Well, in partnership with the Office of Kirsty Sword Gusmão, built a new semi-permanent 3 classroom and teachers’ room building for the school.  The bulk of the funding for this school was raised by two interpid adventurers, Julian and Vivien, who drove from France to Mongolia in a tiny car as part of the Mongol Rally. They travelled 10,000 miles, crossed 3 deserts, 5 mountain ranges and innumerable borders to support Maucale’s children.
