A group from a Rotary club in Australia approached us in 2021 asking whether they could help support COVID vaccinations.
While the vaccination roll-out was very successful in Timor- Leste and was well supported by the Australian government, it was more challenging to implement throughout the very remote parts of the country. Dr Andre from SABEH designed a program under which more than 30 volunteer health professionals worked in Balibo and the surrounding areas to provide COVID vaccinations and general health support. This was done in two stages with funding from Rotary, Balibo House Trust and Spend it Well.
Sabeh’s volunteers provided both a team based in Balibo and roving teams who went to very remote areas, in many cases walking for hours to reach them. Despite difficult conditions of rain and inaccessible roads they delivered 3,892 vaccinations and 3710 medical consultations.
