Ai-Asa School, Bobonaro District

Completed 2021 – US$59,000 3 Classroom and Teachers’ Room School Building, Toilets, Water Connection and School Garden

Ai-Asa school is a 30 minute drive from Balibo and has 120 children.  The school’s 6, 7 and 8 year old children were being taught in a  building which was in terrible shape when we first saw it and collapsed soon after.  This left the youngest children with nowhere to be taught.   The school also had no toilets or water.

Rotary, Balibo House Trust and Spend It Well collaborated to build Ai-Asa a new 3 classroom and teachers’ room building, bring water to the school and install toilets for the children and teachers. The cost for this project was US$59,000 and it was opened in 2021 by John Milkins,  the chair of Balibo House Trust and the son of Gary Cunningham, one of the Balibo Five.  We have also installed a school playground and established a flourishing school garden which provides fresh fruit and vegetables for the children.
