Railuli School Coming Along Well
The wet season has been so long and heavy that the road to Railuli was washed away, making the village accessible only by foot and motorbike. The good news though is that Railuli’s kids won’t have to endure another wet season in their tin roofed, dirt floored school shack (photo below). Work on their new school is coming ahead well again now that the rains have eased and it will be ready for them in a couple of months.

Belola School Project’s Two Most Important People
The school, toilets and playground would not be at Belola School without Agostinho (left of first photo) and Napo – our project manager and technical support engineer. They are the heart of all our projects – negotiating the contract, communicating with the builder, driving countless hours to supervise the construction and liaising with us back in Australia.

Who Gave Belola School Their Playground?
Belola School’s beautiful playground would not be there without the time and effort given by many people at the City of Geelong, Omnitech Playgrounds, Rotary Donations in Kind, Rotary Club of Flemington, Rotary Balibo Project Partnership and the Rotary Foundation. The playground had a long journey. It was dismantled in Geelong, re-conditioned (including replacing many components), cleaned, packed with assembly instructions, shipped to Dili, trucked to remote Belola and then re-assembled. Thank you to everyone involved in that process. It was worth it!

Belola School Is Officially Open!
Belola School has been opened with much pomp, ceremony, colour and enthusiasm. Myself, Nandy, Simon and Agostinho from Spend it Well were there to celebrate with the villagers and with our partners in the project, the Balibo House Trust and Rotary.

New School Celebration at Belola
There’s not much better than helping a village celebrate their new school, when less than a year ago they didn’t have one. That’s what Balibo House Trust, Rotary and Spend it Well will be doing next Wednesday at Belola Prep-2 school. I can’t wait to see the kids in their new school!
