My girls and some puppets

Zoe, my eldest daughter, was with us last year when we saw the fabulous MAC children’s rights group perform at remote Macalaco school.  The puppets they used in part of the performance were pretty old and tatty, so my two younger daughters and I decided to find them some new ones.  We were able to get 4 sets of 6 great animal puppets made by ladies in Bangladesh and imported by the lovely Sally at Earthlink Handcrafts.  Few Timorese children know how to give personalities and names to animals so the girls decided to help them by finding out the Tetum name for each animal and naming them.  So Leo Lafaek (crocodile), Sammy Samea (snake) and the others are now in Timor.  We’re planning MAC performances at the schools in the villages of Festau and Ostico, so the puppets will make their journey to those remote villages soon.

Napoleao starts his scholarship in NZ

For the last year or so Napoleao, a young Timorese man, has been part of our very small team in Timor.  Late last year he heard that after 3 years of trying, he’d been awarded a scholarship to study engineering in New Zealand.   These scholarships are life changing and it seems his experience with Spend it Well might have helped him to stand out from the thousands of other applicants. Can’t wait to see what exciting opportunities are ahead for Napo!2013 Jan Napa at Unitec

1000s of Stationery Items to head to Timor

Thanks to the amazing Rotary Club of Unley SA, 2200 exercise books, 1000 pencils, 80 backpacks and heaps of erasers, coloured pencils, sharpeners etc are packed and ready to be shipped to Timor.  Once in Dili, they’ll be loaded onto trucks and taken by Agostinho on a long journey to the remote schools where we work.    For schools with almost no resources, these will be like gold.   Thanks also to Officeworks at Prospect and Keswick for their generous contributions.

Welcome to the people of Grassroots

Grassroots are a group of people in Australia who commit $50 each a month and meet quarterly to decide where to direct their money for maximum impact.  We’re delighted to have just received a donation from them and will be sure to Spend it Well!
