Macalaco’s School Garden just gets better
Macalaco’s school gardens have always been one of my favourite projects. The villagers have turned $500 into 2 irrigated hectares of fruit and vegetables for the children. On our last trip I handed over a $500 donation from an Australian family to continue funding the gardens. We also gave the school director at Ossoluga school $300 to start their garden which we hope will be as successful.

Rain hats or sun hats?
No-one at the Singapore Australian International School would have believed that their uniforms would end up in the remotest schools in the mountains of East Timor. But thanks to Monica Mayer and her team at the Singapore AIS, the 5000 uniform pieces that they sent over continue to be distributed to kids who have never had uniforms before.
The children wearing the red t-shirts are at Macalaco school and those in yellow at Maucale – both schools are about a 3-4 hour rough drive from Dili. I am told though that the hats are used to keep off the rain during the long wet season – not the sun.

Maucale School’s New Library
It may not look like much – but this tiny library is a massive step forward for Macuale School. Until now, there has been absolutely no books available for the children. Our previous attempts to introduce libraries to the schools have resulted in books packed away in boxes in the teacher’s room and never used. This library is a direct result of the training course the teacher’s attended last month. We couldn’t ask for better proof that the course was successful.

Look out Kids!
This is one of 14 teachers heading home to her remote village after the 3 day training workshop in Dili. She’s heading back with a headful of knowledge and an armful of resources.
Thanks to Rotary Club of Melbourne for funding all of the costs of the workshop, teachers’ travel, food and accommodation.

14 Teachers Visit Dili for 3 Days of Training
14 teachers from the Rural Schools Development Program’s schools (some coming from as far as 9 hours away) are in Dili for a 3 day training workshop. The course includes sessions on story telling, setting up a library, computer skills and science and maths. They’re also visiting the Resistance Museum and attending the premiere of a documentary about Kirsty Sword Gusmao. Total cost is approx US$2,000 and includes trainer fees, workbooks, children’s readers, USB’s, transport and meals over 3 days. This is all being funded by the fabulous people at the Rotary Club of Melbourne.
