PROJECT ‘OSTICO EAST TIMOR’

Maucale School’s New Library

It may not look like much – but this tiny library is a massive step forward for Macuale School.  Until now, there has been absolutely no books available for the children.  Our previous attempts to introduce libraries to the schools have resulted in books packed away in boxes in the teacher’s room and never used.  This library is a direct result of the training course the teacher’s attended last month.  We couldn’t ask for better proof that the course was successful.

14 Teachers Visit Dili for 3 Days of Training

14 teachers from the Rural Schools Development Program’s schools (some coming from as far as 9 hours away) are in Dili for a 3 day training workshop.  The course includes sessions on story telling, setting up a library, computer skills and science and maths.  They’re also visiting the Resistance Museum and attending the premiere of a documentary about Kirsty Sword Gusmao.  Total cost is approx US$2,000 and includes trainer fees, workbooks, children’s readers, USB’s, transport and meals over 3 days.  This is all being funded by the fabulous people at the Rotary Club of Melbourne.

Kirsty Sword Gusmao’s Homecoming

8 months after starting cancer treatment in Australia, Kirsty has returned to Timor-Leste with her and the Prime Minister’s 3 boys.

She was met by hundreds of people at the airport, many of them waving special flags.

When we say we work in “remote schools” we’re not joking!

This year’s extra long and wet rainy season has made it hard to get into the remote villages in Timor where Spend it Well works.

Agostinho took this 15 second video on a recent trip.  This river was just one of several they had to cross.  They did get to Baguio – the first car to do so since the wet season.

RC Melbourne Funds a Year of Teacher Training

I’m delighted to announce that the fabulous people at Rotary Club of Melbourne are funding a series of two day workshops for teachers from our schools over the next year.  Many Timorese teachers have little or no training, so this will have a massive impact on the quality of their teaching.    The sessions we conducted last year were a great success and this funding allows us to build on that work.  RC Melbourne’s funding also pays for bright educational games and resources  for each teacher to take back into the classrooms.  2013’s workshops will start soon!
