Ventilation System for Bairo Pite Clinic’s TB Ward

Bairo Pite Clinic’s TB ward is getting an extraction and ventilation system thanks to USD10,000 from Spend it Well’s donors.  It’s a huge improvement from open windows for a ward which deals with a disease transmitted through the air.  Not a glamorous looking donation – but it will make a huge difference!

“Plumpy’Nut” for Malnourished Kids

Bairo Pite Clinic continues to use the funds from Spend it Well’s donors for its malnutrition program.   One in five Timorese children have wasting from severe malnutrition and women travel long distances from remote parts of the country to bring their children to BPC for help.  “Plumpy’Nut is a low cost peanut paste based supplement fortified with minerals and vitamins which is used for severely malnourished children and babies.  It comes in plastic packs, from which the children can eat directly. These supplements provide a healthy rapid weight gain and can save children and babies from death.  Spend it Well’s donors have funded a year’s worth of these supplements.

Oxygen Concentrator has arrived at BPC

The oxygen concentrator funded by Spend it Well’s donors has arrived in Dili and has already swung into use at Bairo Pite Clinic.  It looks small, but delivers a huge impact by allowing the clinic to provide oxygen to patients from new born babies right through to the elderly.

Oxygen and Suction Machines for Bairo Pite

Bairo Pite Clinic delivers over 1000 babies a year – but have never had the money for an oxygen concentrator (to resuscitate new-borns) or suction machines (to clear their airways and lungs after birth).  Now though they will have them – thanks to the generosity of Spend it Well’s donors who have provided the USD8,000 needed to buy these.  An Australian midwife is one of the donors who has helped make this happen. She spent time working at Bairo Pite as a student and saw how badly these machines were needed in order to save lives.  The machines are awaiting shipment to Dili and should be in use by the end of August.

Fighting Children’s Malnutrition in Timor

It’s hard to believe, but East Timor ranks 3rd in the world for the worst children’s stunting from malnutrition – ranking behind only Yemen and Afghanistan.  Bairo Pite Clinic is a small free health clinic in Dili which runs (among other things) a very successful kid’s malnutrition program.  All their funding comes from donations and so the number of children they can help is limited by available money.  Spend it Well’s donors are helping BPC to expand this program and save more children’s lives by funding an extra staff member and malnutrition supplements.
