Seisal School Construction Starts in 7 Days
No news of my trip to Timor for the Ossoluga High School opening ceremony unfortunately as it was postponed. The children are in and using the school, but the official opening will be later in the year. But the good news is that the Seisal Primary School project is all signed and due to start next Monday. With a planned 4 month construction period, we’re hoping that all 6 new classrooms and 2 teachers’ rooms will be finished by mid August. The photos show the groundbreaking ceremony, including the ceremonial burial of a coin and a picture of Elvino the builder (in yellow) with Aghostinho our project manager after signing the contract.

Ossoluga High School Opens Next Week
We’re off to Timor next week for the official opening ceremony for Ossoluga High School – our new 3 classroom school in the mountains outside Baucau. The kids have been using it for a couple of months, but now that the rains have stopped and the village is accessible by car, we are going to open it officially and celebrate with the locals over roasted buffalo! We’ll also attend a ground-breaking ceremony at Sesal school where construction of the new 6 classroom school is about to start.

Ossoluga High School is finished
Ossoluga High School is finished, with 3 classrooms and a teacher’s room! We’re planning an official opening ceremony for the end of March when the rains have stopped and the dirt roads up the mountain to the village are usable again. The children will be able to use it before then though, after a few final touches are done (including adding window mesh). Just as a reminder of what the school used to look like, I’ve attached a few “before” photos as well.

Ossoluga School Almost Finished
Ossoluga High School is almost finished and is looking fabulous. With the design improvements from our pro-bono architects, this will be our best building yet. It’s our first building to use insulation directly on the roofing iron, avoiding the need for a low ceiling which will make it cooler and lighter.

Kids helping other kids
13 year old Angus Winspear from Tasmania raised $1,000 to support a year long English language scholarship for Amaral, a 20 year old boy in East Timor. Angus did a presentation to his school and sold bags and bags of popcorn to raise the funds (his mum also helped out with a fundraising lunch for some friends). I took a photo of Angus to Timor last week and showed it to Amaral who asked if he could keep it to put it on the wall. I also passed on some rulers, pens and books from Angus’ school Scotch Oakburn. Maria, who we’ve also given a scholarship, is in the photo with Amaral.
