Silent Auction Highlights
The White Party silent auction was fantastic. Some of the highlights:
Prize with the most interest – the cricket bat signed by the Australian Cricket team. I’m guessing that it is definitely not going to the pool room, given the price that one went for!
Most highly fought over – the dinner party for 10 donated by Eliza, organiser of the party and extraordinary caterer on the side. Anyone who has ever eaten Eliza’s cooking will understand the passion of those bidding!
Most expensive prize – the painting from the fabulous Mel Cosgrave who created it specially for the White Party www.melaniecosgrave.com .
Most controversial finish – the Constitution signed by Xanana Gusmao was won with, literally, a last moment bid. The price would have been even higher had they known that copies of the Constitution can only be issued on application to the National Parliament.

Fabulous White Party – US$25,000 and more still coming!
Thursday night’s White Party was extraordinary. There were about 180 people outside on the grass and the beach on a glorious evening. It was a fabulous party, but it was more than that. Everyone was so happy to be part of building the Lequeracabu’u School and there was a special kind of feel to the night. The outcome exceeded all of our expectations – US$25,000 with more donations still coming in! The extra money means we can do some extra building work like adding a teacher’s room (hard to believe that’s an optional extra really) and possibly a water tank. We’ll also be able to fund things like scholarships and teacher training – to make a full package to help put the Lequeracabu’u children in the best possible position. A huge thank you to everyone who helped and who came along to be part of such an amazing night!

10 days to the party
Now everyone is back in town following Easter holidays and volcano ash disruptions, preparations are in full swing for the party. We’re gathering prizes, sorting food and drinks and arranging everything else. Everyone is really excited about the party – suggstions for white costumes range from a tutu, to a dishdasha, to nurses outfits and to a Marilyn Monroe type dress suitable for wearing on top of hot air vents.

The White Party!
Eliza and Megan arrived at Jones the Grocer this morning full of energy and enthusiasm for throwing a fantastic fundraising party for East Timor. They thought the idea of the Lequeracabu’u School was great. Eliza has volunteered her and Damian’s house as a venue – Damian’s only condition being that any party had to have a white theme (he is a man who likes things to look good ) And so the White Party was born.
Nick, another friend in Dubai is also very keen to help and we’ve set a date of May 6 – as late as we can push it we think with the desert summer heating up very quickly. Within an hour Eliza and Megan had the bones of the party sorted out – I’m to sort out details of the project and a supporting letter from Kirsty, Megan is to get a great invite designed and we will send the invite out!

A happy co-incidence
Simon sent me a quote yesterday to build the semi-permanent school at Lequeracabu’u. Agostinho has taken on the project with a passion and has obtained a quote for $ US15, 000 for a contractor to build the school.
In the meantime, with the worst wet season in almost 10 years, roads are still impassable and Simon hasn’t been able to get out to look at other likely sites.
This morning, one of my good friends Eliza, who lives in Dubai, called to say that she and another friend Megan had decided they’d like to arrange a fund raising party for East Timor. It seemed like a perfect match to me – a project with an achievable target and a party which could raise a lot of money. We’re meeting up next week to talk about it, but it is sounding fabulous.
