PROJECT ‘Lequeracabu’u East Timor’

21 May 2010

Lequeracabu’u village

Lequeracabu’u village is nestled behind some old rice fields in a beautiful valley under one of the highest and most sacred mountains in Timor, Mt Matebian. When Simon and Jenny went to scope the school in January, the roads were impassable and they had to walk for one and a half hours through mud and irrigation streams and dodging water buffalo. Assuming there is no more rain, Graham and Simon will drive in there on Tuesday to meet with the village officials and to turn the first sod for the schoool. I have to say though it would be entertaining to see photos of Graham having to trudge through knee deep mud!

A note from Graham in East Timor

Well, I’ve arrived in Dili and had a wonderful opportunity of meeting an extraordinary bunch of people focused in making a difference in various ways for the good of the country and the East Timorese. Hearing about the various projects and initiatives underway whether in justice, procurement, health, educations and nation building is quite eye opening and inspiring. Simon has been introducing me around generously with his time and enthusiasm. We are planning to turn the first sod next Tuesday.

Chinese wisdom

This was sent by a friend – it’s great to think that we are planning for lots of lifetimes

If you are planning for a year, sow rice.

If you are planning for a decade, plant trees.

If you are planning for a lifetime, educate a child

A 7 year old boy gives his birthday presents to Lequeracabu’u

I received an extraordinary donation last week. It was from a 7 year old boy who had decided that instead of receiving birthday presents, he would give his birthday money to the Lequeracabu’u School. We are thinking that there needs to be something special at the school dedicated to this amazing little boy. We have asked him to help us decide how to spend his money and have suggested that perhaps some of his money goes to buying the school a new bell. The school’s bell is currently a rusty old tire hub suspended by a wire. There’s definitely hope for this world!

US$30,000 from the White Party

With a flurry of extra donations this week, the total amount raised for Lequeracabu’u School has passed US$30,000!

The amount we’ve raised is so much greater than our expectations that we did think about just building the bare minimum school at Lequeracabu’u and putting some money to another school.  But while a school building is an essential starting point, there is so much more that is needed to create good education.  We’re about doing things properly and so we’re going to use the extra funds to improve the quality and longevity of the school building and to fund things like teacher training, scholarships and books.

Together everyone has helped contribute the funds necessary to put in place the “full package” for Lequeracabu’u’s 84 children – something we hadn’t even hoped might happen from one night.

Stay tuned for the first sod turning expected for next Thursday!
