Lequeracabu'u, East Timor
The school building in Lequeracabu'u, East Timor was a falling down shack with no windows and dirt floors which turned to mud in the wet season. Some of the village's 84 children attempted to study in the school, others walked up to 4 hours a day to another school.
In 2010 Spend it Well's fabulously successful 'White Party' raised US$30,000 to build a new three classroom school building. The 150 donors followed the progress of the school and continue to see the money they contributed used for other projects in the village such as a feeding program for the school children and a maternal health program. The school was finished less than 6 months after the money was raised. Spend it Well donors attended the opening in October 2010 and gave all the children packs containing school shirts, books, pencils, hygiene items and a few treats. Spend it Well has an excellent relationship with the village chief and will remain involved with the village and the surrounding area. We are currently looking at funding a sporting court to be used by Lequeracabu'u and the neighbouring villages for soccer, volleyball and village gatherings.
