Bairo Pite Clinic, East Timor
Bairo Pite Clinic is a not for profit clinic providing free healthcare in Dili, East Timor. Each day, working out of a collection of ramshackle buildings in a dusty suburb of Dili, American Dr Dan Murphy and his staff see about 300 outpatients, care for 50 inpatients and deliver 3 babies. Despite the huge workload, something that is clear after only a few minutes at the clinic is the genuine care for every patient and the determination to give them the best treatment possible.
The malnutrition rates of East Timor's children are some of the highest in the world with stunting in over 50% of children under age five. BPC has had great results with its malnutrition program, but has been hampered by a lack of funding. That lack of funding also prevents the acquisition of medical items considered essential in most medical facilities.
The generosity of Spend it Well's donors is enabling BPC to expand the malnutrition program to care for more Timorese children by funding the salary of a malnutrition assistant and feeding supplements over the course of 2015/2016. The purchase of an oxygen concentrator (used to resuscitate babies after birth), suction machines and some medication for BPC is also possible because of a number of first time donors including an Australian mid-wife who has visited BPC and seen first hand just how critical this equipment is. The funding to BPC from Spend It Well's donors totals US $21,030.
